Why the goodies? Do not demean Team India's feat

I wish to discuss how I resent the cartloads full of goodies that the government smothers the cricketers with at the slightest opportunity.

Talking about World Cup 2011. Team India did a brilliant job. Exactly. They were doing just that, their job.

We are happy and proud and we love the men in blue, but the God-like reverence seems inane. It seems very cheap and unfair to other worthy professional sectors of our country: farmers, army, navy, police, healthcare workers, teachers and so on that need immediate attention and bureaucratic commitment to meet decades-old demands for better working conditions, easy loans, higher pays. It seems a fickle government that loses hold of its stoic to announce cash awards to the tune of crores, plots in prime locations the country over and a dozen other such lavish goodies to the cricketers at the flimsiest of opportunity possible.

India wins some cricket

One guy had brought a bus horn with which he would make bus-honk noises every time India score runs or got wickets. One or two of the company, on realizing that their Men Friday had omitted to pack such an instrument amongst their personal effects, managed to produce similar sounds with their armpits...More...

Cricket in remore areas

Olavipe was an extremely remote area till a road link was established in 1970. And cricket came to the place in 1941; just nine years after India’s Test debut! The man behind it was OC George, Ollattikulam, husband of my younger aunt Annamma (Kunjammai). We used call him Achhan. He and his brothers were well-known sportsmen of the erstwhile Cochin State. . . More. . .

Team India: There's life after World Cup

Let's look at the positives. We won against Bermuda, didn't we? Why not build on this win. Let's try Outer Mongolia (trust they have a cricket team) next, and thus, strike a winning streak. . .More. . .
